Layering light in a smaller room
A few useful pools of light can make a compact space feel calm and easy to use.
Give each light a purpose
Begin with the things you do in the room. Reading needs a different position and direction of light from getting dressed or sharing a meal. A single bright ceiling fitting often leaves the edges of a room feeling flat, while a few quieter sources make the space more comfortable.
Keep the scale comfortable
A floor lamp can give a seating corner a clear centre without taking much surface space. A pendant above a table should leave room for people to see one another, and a bedside light should be easy to reach from the pillow. Measure the position before choosing a large shade.

Think about the surface
A linen shade softens the light around it. An opaque dome directs more light downwards. A warm interior finish can change the character of the reflected light, but the bulb also matters. Compare the intended bulb type and output before deciding that two fittings will behave in the same way.
Plan the practical route
Check cable positions, switches and the nearest socket. Keep cables away from walking routes and use a qualified electrician for fixed fittings. A thoughtful lighting plan is as much about safe, convenient use as it is about the shape of a beautiful object.
A few clear measurements and a useful conversation are worth more than a hurried decision.
