A small guide to living with oak
Simple care protects a timber surface while allowing its natural character to develop.
Let the material be itself
Oak has a visible grain, small changes in colour and areas that catch the light differently. These details are part of a natural surface. A room usually feels more comfortable when the timber is allowed to have a little variation rather than being expected to match every other wooden object exactly.
Keep the routine simple
Dust with a soft dry cloth. Wipe a spill promptly with a lightly dampened cloth, then dry the area. Avoid leaving a wet vase, plant pot or hot mug directly on the surface. A small coaster or mat is an easy habit that prevents a larger cleaning problem later.

Give it a steady setting
Direct heat and strong sun can affect a natural finish. Leave space between furniture and a radiator, and move decorative objects occasionally so the surface receives light more evenly. Lift objects when moving them rather than dragging them across the grain.
Ask before treating
Not every oak surface has the same finish. Oil, lacquer and other coatings need different care, so a cleaning product that suits one table may be unsuitable for another. Keep the product details and ask for advice before sanding, polishing or adding a new treatment.
A few clear measurements and a useful conversation are worth more than a hurried decision.
